Hi Nappers,

This week, we’re tackling something we’ve been asked more times than we can count:

Are you “gentle” sleep consultants?

It’s a word that shows up everywhere in the baby sleep world, sometimes to help parents feel safe and supported, but sometimes (we’d argue) it gets weaponised to shame families who do things differently.

In this episode, we share our honest take on what gentle means to us, why it’s not a label we stick on our approach, and why no single method works for every baby temperament.

Your No-Shame, Clear-Headed Sleep Strategy Snapshot

Choosing a baby sleep approach shouldn’t feel like picking sides or defending your parenting. Use this simple guide to sense-check what works for YOUR baby, your comfort level, and your goals.

1. Quick Baby Temperament Check

• Is your baby easily overstimulated by lots of touch or presence?

• Do they get more upset when you stay close or do hands-on settling?

• Or do they need physical contact to stay calm?

Use this to sense if they might cope better with more or less hands-on support.

2. Common Sleep Approach Snapshots

Fully Hands-On:

• Pick-up/put-down, in-room settling, constant physical touch

• Works well for babies who calm with parent presence

Intervals-Based:

• Short check-ins every few minutes (e.g. Ferber)

• Good for babies who get overstimulated with constant in-room presence

Out-of-Room:

• Parent settles at bedtime, then gives baby space to self-settle

• Often best for older babies or very alert temperaments

3. Questions to Ask Yourself

• Does this match my baby’s temperament and my comfort level?

• Can I follow through with this technique overnight?

• Does this align with our family’s bigger goals (more sleep, less stress)?

4. Confidence Reminder

There’s no “perfect” method—only what works for you. Switching techniques doesn’t mean you failed. Be curious, be flexible, and back yourself and your baby.

You’ve got this.
